What is a nutrient? - Provided in diet - Needed for growth and maintenance - Essential Classes of Nutrients - Carbohydrates – get it from sugars, fruits and vegetables, grains, Milk. - Proteins – Protect from illness, protection from bacteria, get it from meats, grains and milk. - Fat – what we use to store energy in our body. Insulate our body, make chemicals that helps our immunity. - Vitamins - Minerals - Water – body will shut down without water. Lots of water in our food, and also from drinking water. Organic Nutrients * Organic - Contains carbon - Large complex molecules -Carbohydrate -Protein -Fat -Vitamins Inorganic Nutrients * Inorganic Nutrients - Contains no carbon - Simple Molecules -Water -Minerals Energy is measured in kilocalories Definition of kilocalorie (kcal) - Unit of energy (Heat) needed to raise one kilogram of water one degree centigrade.
