30 th of October 2016 Honors 90 Opinion Paper Latin America is a region that for many in the United States is a source of heritage, pride, and also stereotypes, a region with many diverse countries and cultures that have been frequently featured or broadcast in American TV and to some extent, the Hollywood media. It is a region that, while I don’t have any personal exposure to, is a large part of my media-driven stereotypes that I believe to exist today. One of the reasons that Latin America plays such a large role in my media exposure is that for the past seven years, I have studied the language of Spanish, with an emphasis on the Mexican dialect and pronunciation. Through my seven years of coursework, I have had the opportunity to watch a lot of both American and Latin American produced media content. Most often, this came in the form of comedy shows, and particular flavor of comedy, the Telenovela. While I have watched the Spanish media station Telemundo frequently over the years, the vast majority of my exposure to Latin American culture has come through the comedy realm.
