Psychology Term Paper Article One: Breakups There are three components involved in the memory system: encoding, storage, and retrieval. All three of these intertwine with each other and affect the degree to which a memory is processed and stored. One influential factor on this three-stage process is the moderating effect of emotion. Depending on ones current emotional state, a memory may be encoded and stored differently. When a memory is stored, it is easier to retrieve when in the same emotional state as when the memory was encoded. This phenomenon is known as a mood-congruent memory. In literature released by Robert Malinow and Hailan Hu of Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, experimentation was done to study how and to what extent norepinephrine and stress hormones can influence memory formation and retrieval. Malinow and Hu took mice and segregated them into three groups. Group A was put in an emotionally stressful situation (such as the scent of a predator), Group B was administered a drug to increase the levels of norepinephrine, which is a neurotransmitter that is released in a
