Engineering Computing – COIS11014 Autumn Term 2006 Assignment 3 Due Date: Friday Week 11 Weighting: Pass/Fail Type: Curve Fitting This assignment tests your curve fitting skills using the Excel spreadsheet program. To help you complete this assignment, make sure that you have completed TC1. This assignment has several problems and you need to satisfactorily complete all of them to achieve a pass in the unit. Problem 1 The length of a metal rod is measured repeatedly as its temperature T changes. The table shows the resulting data. ) ( C T o ) ( cm L 10 64.600 15 64.603 20 64.605 25 64.608 30 64.612 35 64.614 The length of a rod is related to its temperature by the general linear equation: T L L L o o α + = where: o L is the length of the rod at C T o 0 = and is the coefficient of linear expansion. You are required to do the following using Excel. 1. Plot L against T with the trendline equation. 2. Find the value of o L and using the SLOPE and INTERCEPT functions.

Unformatted text preview: 3. Use the equation found to calculate the rod length at 48 o C Problem 2 The distance travelled (displacement) by an object moving with constant acceleration varies with the square of time. The displacement of an object is measured over a period of time and the resulting data is provided in the table below. Time (t) Displacement, s (m) 0.0 0.8 1.0 1.4 2.0 2.4 3.0 3.3 4.0 4.7 5.0 6.2 6.0 7.1 The displacement of the object is represented by the following equation. 2 2 1 at S S o + = where: S is the displacement of the object o S is the displacement at = t a is the acceleration t is the time You are required to do the following using Excel. 4. Plot S against t with the trendline equation. 5. Find the value of a using equation found. 6. Use the equation found to calculate the displacement at 10 seconds....
