America Secedes from the Empire (1775 - 1783) Second Continental Congress met on May 10, 1775 in Philadelphia ●no desire for independence bc they wanted to keep fighting so that king/Parliament would consent to redress of grievances Congress Drafts George Washington not a strong military leader, but had great character: patience, courage, self-discipline, sense of justice, trustworthy, ready to go down with the ship chose him bc he was from Virginia bc everyone was upset about New England being the head of the war, not be accused of being a fortune-seeker bc he was already rich, as an aristocrat he could check "the excess of the masses" Bunker Hill and Hessian Hirelings War of Inconsistency (April 1775-July 1776): colonists were seeking to patch up with Britain but were also shooting at redcoats left and right Ethan Allen and Benedict Arnold seized gunpowder store from British June 1775: colonists took Bunker HIll July 1775: Continental Congress adopts Olive Branch Petition (professing loyalty and begging for no more fighting) August 1775: King George III formally declares colonies in rebellion Hessians: German soldiers helping the king; "booty rather than duty" means that they wanted opportunity instead of fighting The Abortive Conquest of Canada ●fighting in Canada contradicted colonial principle of fighting exclusively in defense
