Columbia University | Mailman School of Public HealthReMA_Qualitative MethodsUnit 4Focus Group ExampleVideo TranscriptLanger (moderator): Okay, good. Let me say hello to everybody. I said hello to a few out there, but helloeverybody. Thank you so much for coming. I know you've been told something about this research, and Iwant to explain it again, or if you have any questions, please feel free to ask me.My name is Judy Langer. And as you know, the purpose of this research is we wanted to Columbia University is interested intalking with mothers. I'm sorry; it's a little crowded at this table. Columbia University is interested indeveloping a program that will help parents communicate with their teenagers or pre-teenagers aboutsex education. So, the purpose of this very simply is to find out what can we learn and what could behelpful to parents. Everybody here, and we'll go around and introduce yourself, but everybody here haskids somewhere between nine and nineteen. So you can give us a lot of help on that. I have to tell you; Ido not have teenagers myself. As you may realize, it's been a while since I've been a teenager, so I'm veryeager to learn from you.And the second purpose of this is that there are students in the public health department at Columbiawho want to learn more about what a focus group is. Has anybody here ever been in a focus group?Participant: Yes, I’ve participated in one at the hospital.Langer: Great. Okay, so you have. And you'll see for those of you who haven't been in one before you, wedon't always have quite as many people squeeze at the table, but it's because we're lucky that everybodycame. It's a real opportunity to share ideas and say what's on your mind. We'd like you to obviously tellus as much as you possibly can. I guess if anything you consider too personal of course not. And we havelots of stuff for you to eat because it's around lunchtime and drink, and at any time just help yourself. We have a large group; I really want you all to feel very free to come on into the conversation. Sometimeswe find that people share experiences; sometimes it's very different. You're different; kids are different,so please let us know that, too.And just to tell you that the setup here; this is a one-way mirror. The students are back there, so they cansee in, and they can observe. We run an audio tape, and now this is something I want to ask you. Wehave a videotape also, which we often do; if there is anybody who would prefer we don't videotapethem, that would only be used at Columbia or for research, but anybody who prefers we don't videotape, let me know, and I'll ask you again at the end of this session. Anybody prefer not or is it ok?Participant: So, can I ask what is the objective of the group?
