Sociology of Mental Illness 9/27/16 Biological Theory – talking about damage to the brain o Plasticity of the brain – you can have connections between cells that get damaged, sometimes these parts regrow Example – people who get into accidents and comas may have to relearn basic functions o Treatment – goal is to change the brain Medication – most common way Surgery – examples like seizures and Parkinson’s Shock treatment – goal is to stimulate the impulses in order to function properly o Brain as the command center Brain sends messages about physical functioning as well as emotional functioning Not all medication works the same way when it comes to different people Psychotropic drugs – category of drugs that alter brain chemistry, most purchased drug Neurotransmitters – relay messages in the brain Serotonin – when serotonin isn’t released, it could lead to depression
