Roberto Martinez-Cross Section 21173 Control and Resistance of Slaves Slavery was one of the worst times in our nation’s history. An entire race was horribly mistreated for no reason, as it was thought morally correct. The slaves, however, were not so ready to take all the heavy abuse often given by their masters. It often took a lot to control slaves. If a slave stepped out of line, they were sure to be whipped, or worse. One account from a slave says that his father once told his master “I never had a whooping and you can’t whop me” to which the master replied “But I can kill you”, shooting him down. 1 Slave owners also did not allow the slaves to read or to practice religion on their own to “keep their slaves thus ignorant.” 2 One slave said that they were not “’lowed to see a book or try to learn.” 3 As for religion, a “preacher” would come out to the plantations, but only to tell the slaves things like “serve your masters… don’t steal your master’s meat. Do whatsomever your master tells you.”

As a current student on this bumpy collegiate pathway, I stumbled upon Course Hero, where I can find study resources for nearly all my courses, get online help from tutors 24/7, and even share my old projects, papers, and lecture notes with other students.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
