CONTEXT Work/family conflict arises when the demands associated with work are incompatible with demands associated with family and home life, resulting in negative side effects: Poor health, stress, burnout, limited career development, and life dissatisfaction Working mothers are particularly vulnerable to work/family conflict Conflict is described in three different ways: Time based conflict : physical time taken by work takes away from home time Strain based conflict : tiredness and distraction caused by work that affects family life Behaviour based conflict : behaviour expected in one setting conflicts with behaviour in the other

KEY FINDINGS What arrangements do lesbian parents make to meet their home/work responsibilities? (Workforce participation) Part-time jobs and/or full-time jobs Most participants worked full time in prestigious and well-paying occupations with substantial work histories, which were associated with better work-life outcomes Supportive work policies that reflect organizational culture Taking paid and/or unpaid leaves: maternity, recreational, accumulated annual leave, and etc.

KEY FINDINGS How do lesbian women currently experience their home-work balance? Experiences can be understood as moving along the 3 stages of a continuum: Adverse spillover Lower levels of time besides task autonomy and flexibility in their paid work makes it more difficult to balance work-life tensions Coping strategies E.g. changing jobs, reducing hours, not taking promotional opportunities, delaying career aspirations, etc.
