Lee Say Wah (Sarah) – Malaysia Question 1: A manager is responsible to ensure the organization achieve its objectives by being efficient in optimizing the use of resources, and effective in performance. The qualities one needs in order to be a successful manager are integrity, industriousness, and the ability to get along with people. Other noteworthy qualities are business knowledge, intelligence, leadership and more. For example, Steve Jobs as a task-oriented leader definitely has the industriousness quality in him as he constantly strived to push Apple to new heights. In terms of skills, there are 3 which are technical, interpersonal and decision-making. Technical skills are methods or techniques used to perform a job, such as computer skills. A manager has to be updated with the latest technology in order to stay competitive. A Toyota branch manager in Malaysia, for instance, cannot work efficiently without mastering the 3in1 software system implemented in all Toyota branches in the country. Interpersonal skills are the abilities to maintain good relationships through effective communication. A manager has to be skilful in terms of communication, motivation, diversity, teamwork, networking and conflict handling. Ellen DeGeneres, who is my favourite TV personality, is a manager of her kind as she always maintains good rapport with her fellow guests and production staff. Decision-making skills are conceptual skills used to solve problems by selecting the best alternative. A manager has to be timely or able to set priorities, analytical through doing research and experience, and good in quantitative skills or using mathematics to solve problems. As mentioned by one of my lecturers in the University of Malaya, if we have noticed, most of the CEOs of big companies have certain financial background, which is crucial for effective decision-making. Lastly, the competencies necessary for a successful manager are the abilities to manage self, plan and administer the plan, work in team, handle a diverse group of people, take strategic action plan, and communicate effectively.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
