Abstract Paper #1 - Panic at “The Who Concert Stampede” Early December of 1979, The Who performed a concert in Ohio. The crowd lined up hours early in order to get the best seat in the house, as the seating was first come first serve. This created a detrimental situation in which people were unable to move their arms, and began to fall to the ground with no ability to get up. 11 people were trampled to death that day, and many others were injured. There are many theories as to what overtook people and caused this “panic” to erupt at the concert, and the newspapers and media were the first to call it a barbaric and animalistic act. Many publications surrounding this event assumed that this was an “acquisitive panic,” where the motive was a reward- specifically the most desirable seats. With further analyzation, Norris R. Johnson seeks to prove this thesis wrong in his essay. Johnson found that the assumptions of animalistic behaviors were incorrect. Through the
