Headings provide an outline of your writing to the reader. Not all papers should include headings. One has to check with the professor before including headers in the papers to make sure that headings are appropriate for the specific paper being written (Schwartz et al., 2012). The most important thing to remember about headings is that if you have one heading at a specific level, you must have at least one more (Mead, 2002). For example, you would not label a part of your experiment Part 1 if there is no Part 2. Do not label headings with numbers or letters (APA Manual, 2010, p. 62). All topics of equal importance have the same level of heading (APA Manual, 2010, p. 62). You must use two or more headings within any specific section or use no headings within that section. For example, if you have a subsection of ‘Participants’ under the ‘Methodology’ section, you must have at least one more heading in that section at that level.
