What is genetic engineering? Unknown side effects: pleiotropic effects 1 Genetic engineering isn’t very precise because scientists take a gene from an organism and study it in a test tube. They don’t know how this gene works inside the organism with all the other genes and they only know how the gene reacts in a “test tube environment”1 Genetic engineering is when you take a gene from one organism and put it in another organism. Genetic engineering can be useful when you take the best part of something and put that part in something else to help that something else. (Take John’s good vision and give it to Barbara to make her better.) 1 Some ways of inserting the gene into another organism: Vector and Shotgun Technique 1 The Shotgun Technique is when you take the gene you want to give to an organism and basically shoot it into the organism and pray that one of those shots will make it to the nucleus of the organism. 1

As a current student on this bumpy collegiate pathway, I stumbled upon Course Hero, where I can find study resources for nearly all my courses, get online help from tutors 24/7, and even share my old projects, papers, and lecture notes with other students.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
