A current issue that that is known throughout the world is the Ebola virus. Contracting any kind of illnesses is in itself frightening, however, Ebola is life-threatening since no cure/vaccines have been developed to combat the disease. Because of this risk of fatality surrounding Ebola, many people are fearful in contracting this disease. Social media has been a major contributor to the information we hear about this disease and at the same time, causes more fear among the public. News shows, newspapers, and friends on social media always stress the inherent dangers involving Ebola. In my sociology class, the class talked about how we all live in a culture of fear. Those who hold power, in this case social media and news media, have the power to spread fear among others. News stories and social media tend to exaggerate information, making an issue sound more serious than it seems.
