Hilda Posey 9 November 2016 Marco Polo’s Impacts on Our World Today Marco Polo was an Italian explorer, who had many great impacts on our society. To understand these impacts, it is important to know some of Polo’s background. Marco Polo’s father, Nicola, and uncle, Matteo, were merchants who traveled across Asia to trade with China and other Eastern merchants. The emperor of China, Kublai Khan, became interested in them and in western living. Nicola and Matteo returned to Italy, then took young Marco back to China, across the Silk Road (a complex network of trade routes) in 1271. There, Kublai Khan made Marco, who had learned to speak Mongolian, a commissioner of his court, sending him to investigate many places throughout Asia and India. In 1292, the Polo’s were given permission to return to Italy, and they went home only to be greeted by war between Venice and Genoa. Marco joined the war efforts for Venice, but was soon imprisoned. In jail, he shared the story of his journeys in Asia and along the silk road with another prisoner, a writer, who later published “Il Milone” or “The Travels of Marco Polo”. This book was a very important part of Marco’s contribution to the world. Five of the most important impacts that Marco Polo has had on our world are the bringing the knowledge of paper money and Asian geography to Europe, bettering navigation from the West to Asia, fueling a European age of exploration, and inspiring important explorers like Christopher Columbus.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
