Sociology of Mental Illness 9/22/16 Two studies o 1980s – ECAs o 1990s redone in 2000s Epidemiologic Catchment Area Study (ECAs) – 1980s o 18 and older – 50 years’ old o Used DSM o Five metropolitan areas o Randomized studies o Universities in big cities o Second studies were similar, but results that were produced were different and raised questions National Co-Morbidity Study (1990s) o Co-Morbidity – having more than one mental illness o We can look at results and come up with preventative measures o Two time frames: Lifetime – Have you ever had an experience like this over your lifetime? Twelve-month period o Instrument – what is used in the study o Diagnostic Interview Schedule – improved DIS o Improved instruments used o Findings: Any disorder in a lifetime, 46% of people will have it Two or more disorders, 20% Statistics: Major Depression about 16% Anxiety includes all anxiety disorders o About 28% o Largest category of mental disorders
