Exam 3 Review (11/29/16) Pregnancy Placenta: connecting mother and fetus, exchanges nutrients between the two through the blood Energy and protein needs → increase after the first trimester (in the 2nd and 3rd) Vitamins and Minerals needs Vitamin A: cell differentiation Vitamin Bs: act as cofactors for DNA/RNA synthesis, metabolism → folate: required for neural tube closing (B12 required for regeneration of folate) Vitamin C: collagen (connective tissue and bone) Vitamin D: calcium metabolism and bone development Iron: hemoglobin which transports O2 to tissues Zinc: cofactors for DNA and RNA synthesis Lactation Hormones made in the hypothalamus → secreted by pituitary gland, anterior pituitary secretes prolactin and posterior pituitary secretes oxytocin prolactin stimulates milk production, and oxytocin gives the ability to release milk -- “milk let down” Fetal Alcohol Syndrome
