10/12/2016 2 Depends on several factors Experimental design must reflect this complexity Increase the number of levels of the IV. Increase the number of IVs! ADV. EXPERIMENTAL DESIGN Factorial experimental designs Most experiments have a factorial design. “Factorial” => More than 1 IV The following information is very important. FACTORIAL DESIGN FACTORIAL DESIGN An experimental design in which all levels of each IV are combined with all levels of the other IVs. A factorial design allows investigation of the separate main effects and interactions of two or more IVs on the DV. FACTORIAL DESIGN Researchers often manipulate two or three IVs simultaneously in an experiment. 7 8 9 10

10/12/2016 3 Each IV is called a Factor FACTOR An Independent Variable (IV) in an experiment in which more than one IVs is mani pulated. “Factor” just refers to an IV within a group of IVs in a single experiment. FACTORIAL DESIGN EXAMPLE staged manipulation Measured ratings of self-esteem in participants who waited in a room with a confederate who could vary in two ways (gender and attractiveness) Independent Variable 1 : Gender of the confederate Male, Female Independent Variable 2: Attractiveness of the confederate Hot, Not so hot FACTORIAL DESIGN EXAMPLE Participant can be in a room with a confederate who is: 1. A Hot Male 2. A Not so hot Male 3. A Hot Female 4. A Not so hot Female 1.

As a current student on this bumpy collegiate pathway, I stumbled upon Course Hero, where I can find study resources for nearly all my courses, get online help from tutors 24/7, and even share my old projects, papers, and lecture notes with other students.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
