Garrett 1 Jerald Garrett Dr. Luke Donahue Introduction to Literature: Power, Self, Technology 5 November 2015 Louis Althusser’s “Ideology and Ideological State Apparatuses” is an investigation into ideology and its affects on society. His in depth analysis of the reproduction of the conditions of production and the reproduction of the means of production elaborate on how ideology molds these processes. Their importance is highlighted as he quotes Marx, “A social formation which did not reproduce the conditions of production at the same time as it produced would no last a year.” (127) This process is what allows society to continue to produce and has been “so integrated into our everyday ‘consciousness’ that it is extremely hard to raise oneself to the point of view of reproduction.” (128) It is also necessary to continue the process by reproducing the means of production. This is the ability to “foresee what is needed to replace what has been used up or worn out in production.” (129) The
