Millions of neurons transduce different energy types into electrochemical energy in patterns that only our brain seems to understand. The simple act of reading this assignment requires you to look at the page (or computer screen), direct attention to these black shapes called letters, and occasionally notice when something doesn’t luke rite. Light bounces from the page to your eye which activates a receptor, which excites and inhibits some neurons, which activates an optic fiber in some pattern, which is received by various parts of cortex, which then somehow translates into seeing, reading, and ultimately understanding this assignment. You see by now that perception is complicated. Perception studies have been a large part of psychology for about as long as psychology was a serious scientific enterprise. As a result, we have much knowledge about many different perceptual phenomena. We also have good knowledge about the behaviors that indicate specific perceptual
