FINA A231 - The Age of Giants:  Art in the Time of Leonardo and Michelangelo This course will investigate the art of Italy during the Renaissance.  We will focus much of our  time on the artists of central Italy, including such luminaries as Masaccio, Donatello, Botticelli,  Leonardo da Vinci, Raphael, and Michelangelo.  In addition, we will examine the puzzling  phenomenon of Mannerism (Pontormo, Bronzino, Parmigianino) and the warm, painterly  naturalism of Venetian art (Giovanni Bellini, Giorgione, Titian). Instructor:  Giles Knox Office:  Fine Arts 413 Office telephone:  855 5330 e-mail:  [email protected] Office hours:  Mondays, 11:00-11:45 a.m., or by appointment Required Readings Textbook: A special edition for this class of Stephen J. Campbell and Michael W. Cole,  Italian  Renaissance Art , is available for purchase at the Friends of Art Bookshop, Fine Arts 120 Course Evaluation 1. attendance (10%) 2. test 1 (10%) – 1 February 3. test 2 (15%) – 22 February 4. test 3 (20%) – 30 March 5. one 4-6 page writing assignment (20%) – due 13 April 6. final examination (25%) – Monday, 2 May, 2:45 – 4:45 p.m. Lecture Attendance Policy Lecture attendance is mandatory and will be recorded at each meeting.  Please note that tests and  the final exam will be based mostly on what has been covered in class, and that frequently our  perspective will be different from that offered by the textbook.  In other words, you will not
