Shange - teaches us through the eyes of a little girl about the history of Haiti o Specifically Toussaint o She's a little girl interested in history and not "pioneer girls & magic rabbits" Key line: "Toussaint was the beginning of reality for her" Lady in brown as a little girl is not accepted by either race; not white, not black (Father is white,  mother is black) Feels like an outcast --  her books are her friends
