Madeline Schohan October 21, 2016 Survey of US History  1. Two U.S. Presidents are key figures in this era, Herbert Hoover and  Franklin Delano Roosevelt. These men have radically different  reputations today. In what ways did FDR offer a different kind of  leadership than his predecessor?  Roosevelt believed in government spending to help people in need where as  Hoover believed in “rugged individualism” where people where held  accountable for their own welfare so the government should not intervene.  2. The New Deal refers to many innovations and initiatives FDR  sponsored, some more successful than others. Which specific New Deal  measures stand out to you as historically significant, and why?  The social security act of 1935 was meant “to provide general welfare by  establishing a system of Federal old-age benefits and by enabling states to
