LING 301Final DraftPaper 1 - The Constituency of Phrasal Verbs
1.IntroductionIn the English language, a phrasal verb is defined as a verb composed of a standard verb and aprepositional adverb. This paper seeks to examine the constituency of phrasal verbs by looking at theverbs and prepositions that make them up. Consider the following sentences:(1)a. Pat rode out the storm.b. Jerry blew up the building.c. Dana threw out the trash.d. Sandy looked up the answer. The phrasal verbs in the aforementioned sentences (“rode out,” “blew up,” “threw out,” “looked up”) canbe interpreted with either theTwo Phrase(TP) orSingle Phrase(SP) hypothesis. The application of theTP hypothesis would imply that verb and preposition are separate units leading to the constituency of aprepositional phrase with an NP. Contrarily, the SP hypothesis implies that the verb and preposition act asa single verb and thus are a part of a single VP and that a prepositional phrase cannot be derived from it.In the following figure, tree (2a) depicts the application of the TP hypothesis while (2b) depicts SP.(2) a.(2) b.In order to determine the internal structure of the phrasal verbs, the phrasal verb’s capability to passconstituency tests will be measured. Constituency Test 1 will look at a phrasal verb’s ability to pass theconjunction test. In this test, the PP will be separated from the VP and then conjoined with another PP inorder to see if it is a constituent. Constituency Test 2 will examine a phrasal verb’s ability to pass the
replacement test which will substitute phrasal verbs out with proforms and judge the grammaticality ofresulting sentences. Finally, Constituency Test 3 will inspect how phrasal verbs behave in the dislocationtest. Here, phrasal verbs are moved to a different part of the sentence from where they originally were andresults will be analyzed to see if the grammar is correct. In the end, it will be made clear that the resultsfavor the structure of the SP hypothesis and don’t support the structure of the TP hypothesis.
