Intro to Philosophy Free Will and Determinism Hard Determinism: The theory that human behavior and actions are wholly determined by external factors, humans do not have genuine free will or free will or ethical accountability. Your action is free only if you could have done otherwise in the Categorical sense – i.e., given exactly what you were at the time, and given the exact circumstance in which you were in fact placed. a. This amounts to contra-causal freedom Contra-Causal Freedom: Free will cannot exist because it is not free of the causes that create the need to exert will against those causes. Principle of Determinism: All events (including choices and actions) are caused, and so are entirely determined by antecedent conditions. All events Mental or Physical have a cause. There are no events without an initializing cause and that event follows immediately when the cause is initialized. It does not allow chance
