CHEM 231,DistillationGoal:The goal of this experiment is to separate a 50/50 sample, consisting of 25 mL acetone and 50 mL 1-propanol, using the distillation set up. Using both simple and fractional distillation, to find the refractiveindex for the compound. Our group performed the fractional distillation.Appearance:According to Sigma-Aldrich’s safety data sheet the literature appearance of acetone is a colorless liquidwith a semi-sweet odor, and the appearance of 1-Propanol is also colorless liquid with a strong moldyodor, similar to rubbing alcohol. The initial appearance of the 50/50 sample was also a clear liquid, aswell as and after distillation.Experimental:Boiling Point: The literature boiling point of acetone was reported to be 56.00C with a dipole-dipolemoment. And the literature boiling point of 1-propanol is 97.00C with a hydrogen bridge bond. Thegroup we worked with performed the simple distillation and recorded a boiling point range of 57.00C-93.00C. My partner and I recorded a 610C-950C boiling range, using fractional distillation. We canassume that it is pure acetone because of the boiling point ranges retrieved.
