Chapter 11 Biodiversity and Conservation biology biological diversity - biodiversity the diversity of species, genes, populations and communties There are different levels of biodiversity: -species diversity - variety and number of species in one area. ( Species- organisms that share certain traits and can breed with each other) -species richness - number of species -relative abundance or eveness - extent to which numbers of different species are equal, or some dominate -speciation - generates new species - adding to richness -extinction - decreases species richness - immigration & local extinction - only affects region locally -speciation and extinction - affects global population Taxonimists -scientists who classify species using physical appearance and genetic make up. Related species are grouped into genera (genus) 2 part Latin name denotes genus and species example - Panthera tigris - tiger Panthera onca - jaguar Domain - Eukarya Kingdom - Animalia Phylum -Chordata Class - Mammalia Order - Primates Carnivora Family - Hominidae Felidae Genus - Homo Panthera Species - Homo Sapiens Panthera Tigris MAN TIGER subspecies -populations of species that live in different geographic areas and have some different characteristics adapted to their environment. Like speciation - but result does not go far enough to create new species Examples : Siberian tigers are taller and have thicker coats than Bengal tigers. genetic diversity
