Five factors that influence soil formation: 1. Climate - warmth speeds chemical reactions, causes weathering. Moisture also causes weathering 2. Organisms - earthworms and burrowing animals mix and aerate the soil, also add organic matter 3. Topographical relief - hills and valleys affect sun exposure and influence how the soil moves 4. Parent material - chemical and physical properties of the parent materials influences the resulting soil 5. Time - soil formation can take decades, centuries or millenia Soil consists of layers called horizons - 6 horizons O- top layer of organic material A- second layer - inorganic material mixed with some organic material from top layer - this is the topsoil E- loses some minerals and organic matter through leaching B- subsoil accumulates minerals from above this layer also called illuviation horizon, zone of accumulateion or zone of deposition C- parent material leaching - solid particles are suspended or dissolved in liquid and transported to another location (water leaches minerals from soil)
