Better educated and more skilled than most 2 nd stream immigrants. Jews in US long before Japs and made considerable progress toward acceptance. Even to Germ Jews Japs appeared alien. Jews = no foreign gov support. Jap government more consistently monitored well-being of its people and responded accordingly. “frontier period” Men arrived first, primarily for economic reasons. Japs were unable to immediately form basic institutions as the family and other associated social structures that would support a separate ethnic community. Women eventually emigrated to help form families, etc. Period in Japan 1636-1885 1636, Jap government forbade its people to emigrate. Ended in 1885, Jap men came to US to better themselves economically. Who returned to Jap extolled American ed and economic potential, perhaps to a fault. Reasons for emigration Aspiring youth on farms should furnish bulk of labor emigration to Hawaii and US. Find opportunities improve economic condition. Designed to end Jap immigration. Permitted the wives of residents and persons other than laborers to enter country. Series of notes exchanged between American and Japanese governments-which hinged on restriction by the Jap gov rather than by the Am gov. Both agreed that Japs who were established and self-supporting could bring over wives and other family members. Many belonged to a cat of women known as picture brides . 1924 Immigration Exclusion Act (also on 395 and 409) Virtually ended immigration until after WWII. Not until major immigration reform of 1965 could Japs immigrate to US in sig numbers once again. Different generations and their significance, esp. the first 3 (but you should also recognize which ones are NOT the first three) Issei =1, Nisei =2 (born US), Sansai = 3, Yonsei =4, Gosei = 5 Total #, locations 1910 = 129,797, 1920=83,837…. 73% on West Coast. Roughly 1Mil total. Page 392- initial position of the dominant group plus 1 st half of 393 Conflict, hostility, and separation. Indentured state of Jap men in eearly years – late 1800s and early 1900s-to something approaching Black slavery or Native Am separation on the reservations. Very first Japs to enter US were not treated with hostility because they were a small group. Japs in US by 1880 = 148. Eventually returned to Japan. They
