ANTH 143 – Lecture Notes 2/20/08 I. Measuring Growth How do we know what is normal? o Compare to pop averages o NHANES – Natl health and nutrition examination survey Over-sample some areas of pop. to target specific pop. Breastfed vs. Formula-fed o BF are on avg. larger for the 1 st  two months of life o FF take over >2months Premature infants compared to premature growth curve (~ 1yr of life) Different diets? o If people are especially well-nourished, should grow similarly Adopted-child use of population specific grid o Age  When were they adopted? Catch-up growth? o Nourishment: poor? How long? o Poorly socialized? How long? Does “normal” change over time? o Normal=optimal? o BMI – no o Stature – yes Practical Measurements o Head measurements      – proxy of brain growth, esp. during the  first 2 years of life
