The rise of the cotton industry Taxes are increased 9 times on cotton i. Protectionism from India o ii. The Importance of the Colonies 1. For supply- it is cheap to bring it in 2. And demand- slave owners need it to cloth their slaves for a low price b. Coal- allows manual labor to not be a thing anymore, therefore, they didn’t have to pay anyone to produce products used to fuel industries that made textiles and steel i. Steam power o used originally to dig up coal, and then the thought of expanding it came about ii. Rail- c. What separated England from China o England has the double advantage of colonies and coal o China has peasants working in the field o In the colonies, you can have a captive market for the goods and high agricultural production 2)
