Sarah Ziegler November 2, 2016 Things Fall Apart Paper Things Fall Apart was a novel written by Chinua Achebe and was set in a village in Nigeria. The book had two main focuses: one that detailed the life of the main character, Okonkwo, and his downfall in society, and one that described the struggle between change and maintaining tradition with the arrival of European missionaries. These two stories, intertwined, created the perfect illustration of the conflict between the Ibo people and the missionaries, as well as depicting the internal battles that individuals, such as Okonkwo, had with the evolution of their society. Throughout the text, the presence of the European missionaries proved to be a great disturbance to the Ibo people’s way of life. In turn, this warranted the African people to respond to the presence of these foreigners by various means. Although there was a multitude of ways in which the African people reacted to the presence of missionaries, such as burning down the Christian church and the conversion of the African people to a monotheistic religion, the most disruptive response, in Achebe’s view, seemed to be acts of violence committed by the Ibo people against the missionaries.
