The FBI’s Uniform Crime Reports (UCR) shows arrests for juvenile females for assaults and violent crime from 1980 through 2003 rose from 20 percent to more than 30 percent of the total crimes committed. Girls are now more likely to be arrested for fighting with parents, teachers, or other girls than they were in the past. Arrests for homicides, robbery, rape/sexual assault have not risen. Zero Tolerance Policies For example, throwing an object at another girl might not have resulted in an arrest in the ’80s, but girls today are being arrested for this type of behavior.

This may still be a surprising number, but it should be noted that the US population increased 73% over this time period. Other questions should be asked: Who counted the gunshot deaths? What is a “child”? What is meant by killed by guns – homicide, suicide, accidents?

50% of a certain country’s population are so illiterate they can’t read the morning newspaper. How many of these people are less than 6 years of age? Maybe 10% read in other languages. What about people who can’t see well enough to read the paper? Were these possibilities taken into account?
