Kevin Bulvanoski Lab #4 Lab 4: Serial Learning Method The Serial Learning Method is the oldest method used to study learning and memory, first used by Ebbinghaus in 1885. In this lab, we will use the Serial Learning Method by presenting a series of ten ordered index cards with an item written on one side, word or CVC, to the participant who then must repeat the order back to the experimenter for as many trials as it takes until he/she repeats all ten items in a row in the correct order. From the results we can observe whether there is a serial position effect, or whether the position of an item in a serial list influences one’s ability to recall the item. We will observe whether people will recall items better towards the end of the list, known as recency, or whether they will recall items better from the beginning of the list, know as primacy. My hypothesis is that the position of an item in a serial list will influence one’s ability to recall the item, more specifically, that one will always remember best the first and last positions. Methods Participants: Our participants were a group of male and female college students. Our specific pair was one male and one female college student. Materials: Two sets of ten ordered index cards with an item written on one side. One set’s items are comprised of words, while the other set’s items are comprised of a CVC set, or non-words comprised of letters in the order of consonant, vowel, consonant. Procedure: Students form pairs and perform an experiment using two sets of ten ordered index cards with an item written on one side. One set’s items are comprised of words, while the other set’s items are comprised of a CVC set. One student will be the
