Cuban Revolution There have been movements away from one kind of economic system to another - in eastern Europe you have the transformation away from communist systems to more democratic systems and free market systems - the reasonf or calling it a velvet revolution is because it is something that is soft - there is not the same sort of violence, or same sort of upset - now, we start using revolution with everything Iranian Revolutions - this counts as a real social revolution - there was significant change and transformation within Iranian society - many in power and leadership found themselves not only forced out of leadership, btu forced into exile, many were arrested - this is a major break with the past - this revolution is often referred to in the literature as an Islamic revolution Islamic Revolution - theocracy is a government led by God - people use this term to refer to Iran because it is led by clerics - it is led by a group of religious scholars - Iran is not governed directly by God—it is governed by a group of clerics who hold specific - People who come to power put in place rules and institutions which give pre- eminence to religious law—in this case Islamic law - Certainly, the introduction of aspects of religion into parts of people;s lives in which it hasn’t played a major role - Certainly that religion comes to have a role in defining elements of practice well beyond the very narrow realm of devotion and spirituality - Religion comes to play a role in people’s lives not at their own discretion but that by virtue of the way the state is established, will play a role in your life Iranian Rev continued - it was not all clear that this was an Islamic Revolution - As time passed, and as certain groups succeded in overcoming others - Various groups had different ideas of what Iranian society should look like after the shah was sent packing - There was a real struggle for power - This is a period of time in which there is an attempt to find moderates - In the case of Iran, the Regime that is ultimately concolidated is one that is under the leadership of this very charismatic figure, Khomeini who has developed a rule of Islamic governance that atleast for some Shiites has marked a departure about what the role of the clergy should be
