Cognitive Brochure Write up. Influences Julian Rotter had been interested in psychology his whole life. He was the first psychologist to use the term social learning theory (Schultz & Schultz, 2011, p. 256). Rotter focused his studies on hu- man subjects that were involved in social interactions. Rotter focused on the cognitive processes. His thinking was that we are all conscious beings that have the ability to influence all the experiences that af- fect our lives (Schultz & Schultz, 2011). Rotter s biggest achievement was his findings on Locus of Con- trol. He believed that people either had an internal or external locus of control. A person s locus of control is referring to how one believes reinforcement comes. Internal locus of control is when one believes that their behavior drives their reinforcement; external locus of control is when one believes that outside forces drive their reinforcement. Rotter also found that a person s locus of control is learned early in childhood. E. R. Gunthrie deplored the mechanistic model and argued that stimuli cannot always be reduced to physical terms (Schultz & Schultz, 2011, p.354). He thought that stimuli shouldn t be described only in behaviorist terms, but also in cognitive terms. This is because a stimulus is considered to be a cognitive process. Gestalt psychology influenced the cognitive movement with its focus on organization, structure, relationships, the active role of the subject, and the important part played by perception in learning and memory (Schultz & Schultz, 2011, p.354). Jean Piaget was a Swiss psychologist who administered tests to children. He later became well known for his work in child development with focus on the cognitive stages. His work was well known in Europe, instead of the United States because at this time behaviorism was the main focus.
