During the book Jethro Creighton (the main character) must learn those lessons within a short amount of time due to his three brothers and his cousin going off to fight in the war. During this time, his father also suffers a heart attack which intern leaves Jethro with even more responsibility than he had before. In Across Five Aprils 89 by Irene hunt Jethro will learn to forgive and trust his family and friends more. Jethro takes on many different responsibilities such as taking the team of horses to town to fetch supplies in this part of the book Jethro is exited to prove he is responsible but as the book goes on, he gets tired of doing things for other people because he was told to and instead wants to do things for other people because he wants to. “Not long after, Matt, Jethro's father, has a heart attack that renders him unable to work the field.
