Joshua Huver 12 March, 2008 REL 1120 J. Bird Cultural Artifact: The Buddy Christ The object that I decided to choose for my cultural artifact is a semi-well known and humorous image and symbol created from a similar and definitely more serious piece of legit artwork. The object is called the ‘Buddy Christ’ and is a colorful depiction of Jesus pointing and giving a thumbs up while winking. It was created by Kevin Smith, a movie writer/director/actor for his film Dogma . From what I know, Smith was raised Catholic and has a very argumentative and debate oriented personality. His films are always very dialogue driven and include topics from religion, comics, politics, social taboo and Star Wars, all the while incorporating hilarious points and crude jokes. Particularly in Dogma , Smith deals more with religion and tackles religious traditions and beliefs head on, and the Buddy Christ is a key driving component of the campaign.
