Joshua Huver 10 April, 2008 ENG 1120 Wayne Johns A Good Man is Hard to Find at Applebee’s Everyone has people in their lives that are the ‘old fashioned’ and typically stuck up type of people. Usually these are the extremely conservative and savvy older people that think they are the bee’s knees. When Flannery O’Connor wrote A Good Man is Hard to Find , she formed the character of the Grandmother after this characterization. Throughout the story, the Grandmother is trying to persuade the rest of the family to make their decisions based off of what she wants to do. Directly on the contrary to what the Grandmother represents is the Misfit. At the end of the story the two opposites meet, and share an interesting conversation. In Flannery O’Conner’s A Good Man is Hard to Find , she pits the Grandmother and the Misfit against each other in a psychological battle in which the Grandmother tries to talk the Misfit out of his actions, but to no avail, as the Misfit is one hundred percent sure that he is in control over something that he doesn’t know much about: himself. The Grandmother is an odd character. When she can’t get what she wants out of a situation, she acts like the alternative was almost a better decision and acts just as pompously as if she had wanted to do it in the first place. For example: when the family decides on Florida rather than east Tennessee, “the grandmother was the first one in the
