Unformatted text preview: Josh Huver Huver -1 Biology Mrs. Hanks 7 June, 2005 Water and the Transport System of a Plant Depending on the plant, whether it sports a taproot, such as a dandelion, or a fibrous root like an onion, the plant may get its water in different ways. If the plant has a taproot, the tip may go as deep as the subsoil, which features a mixture of tightly packed rocks and inorganic particles, leaving little room for water let alone a root. Most of the plants water absorption though, will come from the topsoil layer, which is made from a combination of organic matter, sand, clay and minerals. Fibrous roots however, are short and might not penetrate past the Humus layer, which is a layer of just organic materials. Once the water seeps through the soil, it is available for the plant to absorb. Sticking out from the roots are billions of tiny root hairs. These root hairs penetrate the spaces between soil particles to maximize the roots surface ability and allow it to absorb the maximum amount of water.
