The three types of qualitative research are phenomenological, grounded theory, and ethnographic research. What are the differences and similarities between two of the three types of studies? There are three types of qualitative research are phenomenological, grounded theory, and ethnographic research. Phenomenological research attempts to examine how people perceive, and comprehend a particular situation. The information can only be collected from individuals who have lived through the experience. Grounded theory research is based on symbolic reaction theory where it is used to discover problems that exist in a social scene and how the person views or deals with them. It involves formulation, testing, and redevelopment until a theory is developed . Grounded theorists and phenomenologists are alike in that they, collect and analyze data from the subjects’ perspectives They both involve social aspects, and true life experiences, and seek to explore a subject’s experiences in the setting of the world in which the subject lives. Phenomenology and grounded theory studies have several differences. Phenomenology arose from philosophy, primarily influenced by Edmund Husserl and Martin Heidegger. This theory purpose is to describe and explore experiences, by collecting data from people who have lived through those experiences. Data is often restricted to interviews. Grounded theory developed in sociology, these theorists seek to encompass all data sources that might contribute to theory development, and takes on a more objective stance. Grounded theory describes or explains the phenomenon understudy, and how a person views it. but unlike phenomenologists, the grounded

theorists interview things they can observe such as a diary, photos, past research or literature (Grove, Grey, Burns, 2015). While phenomenology captures the spirit of real live experiences. These three methodsare similar by studying how people perceive and react in a certain situationinfluenced by their belief/moral system. Reference Grove, S., Gray, J., Burns, N. (2015).
