The Ramayana 1. Dasharatha , King of Ayodhya a. Could not father any sons with his THREE wives i. Performs horse sacrifice and Vishnu gives him divine rice and milk to give to his wives. ( Symbolic conception ) 1. Blessed with four sons a. Rama by wife 1 st wife Kausalya b. Bharata by wife 2 nd wife Kaikeyi c. Lakshman by 3 rd wife Sumitra d. Satrughna by 3 rd wife Sumitra b. Believes that Rama’s exile is due to an error Dasharata must have done in a previous life i. Shot a hermit by accident and the hermit’s parents curse Dasharata, saying that he should meet his death by grieving for a son c. Within a week of Rama’s exile, Dasharata dies of grief 2. Rama- Eldest son of Dasharata a. Vishnu’s human form b. Inseparable companion with Lakshman i. Taken by sage Viswamitra to ancient forest. They killed wicked Rakshasas that harassed the hermits of the ancient forest ii. Heard about Sita c. After marrying Sita, Dasharata installs him to the throne d. Enters into an alliance with monkey king Sugriva and helps raise a huge army of monkeys and bears. With them, Rama and Lakshman march towards Lanka, the town where Sita is being held
