CH 3 H 3 C OH CH 3 33% H 2 SO 4 CH 3 H 3 C CH 3 + CH 3 H 2 C CH 3 2-Methyl-2-butanol 2-Methyl-2-butene 2-Methyl-1-butene _ _ _ _ _ % _ _ _ _ _ % Procedure 1.0 ml of water was placed into a 5mL round bottomed flask, to which 1.5ml of concentrated sulfuric acid was added dropwise with thorough mixing. The solution was cooled in an ice bath, to which 2.0mL (0.009 mol) of 2-methyl 2 -butanol was added. The reactants were mixed and set up for simple distillation; distillate was collected between 30-45 degrees Celsius. The receiver was cooled with ice in order to avoid loss of product by evaporation. 0.5mls of 3M NaOH was added to the distillate in order to neutralize the sulfurous acid mix. The aqueous layer was drawn off and the product was dried over anhydrous calcium chloride. The dried mix of products was transferred to a clean distilling apparatus; the products were collected to 45 degrees Celsius. Subsequently, the
