DeWitt 1 Mark DeWitt English 125-014 Suzanne Hancock 29 January 2007 Records Are Made to Be Broken I stared at Craig in anticipation as he swam toward the wall. My eyes constantly shifted from Craig to the scoreboard and back again. He was finally nearing the wall just as it seemed like he was running out of time. Then I carefully watched his long, outstretched arm reach toward the wall. Once I saw Craig’s fingertips touch the wall, I immediately gazed up at the scoreboard. I was astonished; I could not believe my eyes. We had finally done it. This was one of the best moments of my life. My favorite activity in high school was swimming. I swam on the varsity swim team for four years. Those four seasons were the best sports seasons of my life. Prior to high school, I never swam competitively. However, I did take many swim lessons at my local YMCA as a child and teenager. I had always loved swimming and had been fairly good at it. When I entered high school as a freshman, I knew that I wanted to join a sports team. Choosing which team was the hard part. I had been pretty good at basketball in middle school, but I did not think that I was good enough to join my high school team. So, I decided to give the swim team a shot. I figured that my experience from swim lessons may serve me well at the high school level. My experiment of joining the swim team turned out much better than I had expected. I instantly fell in love with swimming. Swimming gave me an escape from the rest of my life and the outside world. When I swam, all I looked at was the bottom of the pool. The only thing that I could see was the thick, black stripe on the bottom of the pool that kept me swimming straight.
