Mark DeWitt 35651743 Chemistry 216 Section 128 Experiment 5: The Aldol Condensation Introduction The purpose of this experiment was to prepare and recrystallize a benzalacetophenone through an aldol condensation using an aldehyde and a ketone. The aldehyde that I chose was 4-Nitrobenzaldehyde. The ketone that I chose was 4’-Methoxyacetophenone. Once the benzalacetophenone was produced, the purity needed to be confirmed through recrystallization and TLC, IR, and melting point analyses. Reaction Results The aldehyde that I chose was 4-Nitrobenzaldehyde. The ketone that I chose was 4’-Methoxyacetophenone. These are the steps that I performed for the experiment: 1. Placed 1 mmol of the aldehyde that I chose into a conical vial equipped with a magnetic spin vane. 2. Added 1 mmol of the ketone that I chose into the vial. 3. Added 1 mL of 95% ethanol to the vial.
