A proto-modernist bc he’ s interested in the condition of human openness. Doesn’t  believe that mind and body are one and transcendentally identified.  Why does he choose that particular flaw?  He thinks that getting rid of it will make  her perfect About someone who wants to take a real life ad turn it into a piece of art. Not a  happy ending There’s no mind without he body, it comes as a package The wife has no power over her birthmark or how her marriage is going. It shows  how powerless women were back then He’s trying to overcome and defeat nature by fixing her birthmark   He thinks his mind can beat or change nature He wants to have a physical attraction (as towards artwork) and not an emotional  attachment
