In Lab: Procedure: 1) Filled a 250mL Erlenmeyer flask with 20mL of distilled water 2) Added 1g of unknown solid to a 125mL Erlenmeyer flask with a boiling chip 3) Added 10mL of boiling water to the sample and stirred for a minute, adding 2-3mL more each time and stirring until dissolved 4) The solution was then poured through a filter lined funnel note: some solid formed on filter paper while pouring 5) More boiling water was poured into funnel to dissolve the remaining solid 6) The solution was then heated and allowed to boil off excess solvent 7) The solution was allowed to cool to room temperature 8) We then cooled the flask in an ice bath for 10 minutes 9) Removed solid with cold water and scraping into a vacuum funnel 10) We allowed the solid to dry and then crushed into powder with a glass tube 11) Measured the weight of the purified solid 12) Some of the crushed sample was then heated until melting was observed and the melting point noted 13) A mixture of the purified sample and benzoic acid was then heated to verify the
