Demand for Cigarettes In 1984 an estimate was made of the demand function for cigarettes in the U.S. The data used were annual observations from 1947-1982 on the price of cigarettes, P, total cigarette advertizing, A, per capita income, Y and the average price of cigars, P C . Two other variables were also included in the regression: C, a variable which takes on the value 1 if the year is after the 1953 American Cancer Society report linking smoking with cancer and equals zero for other years, and D a variable equal to 1 if the year is during the time period (1968-1970) when the Federal Communications Commission required that one antismoking commercial be aired for every four smoking commercials.
