China Class:  Chapter  11 Qing Dynasty- 1644-1911, also Manchu Dynasty.  Manchu come in from Manchuria,  o Buffer states- separated mainland China from invading armies.  Allowed for access to other territories, 1 st  line of  defense against Mongols.  Revolts were easily dealt with.   o Nurhaci- philosopher, writer, tactician.  Accepted endorsement of other leaders to become leader of his own sect.  Decided to spend time consolidating his power, created alliances through marriages and tributes, built a castle.  Under him china began to shape up.  Had a lot of good allies.  At end of his rule, all jurchen tribes were united,  rebuilt the economy of his region through trade.   Was a military man, thought china was lacking modernity, so he reestablished a sense of discipline and  order, improved gunpowder use.  Set up individual ‘units’ of 300 soldiers.  Units were combined into  Banners, ended up reaching 16 Banners in strength.  Allowed for 170,000 man army.  Let anyone join the  army.  Turned against Chinese overlords, thus buffer state became central.  Changed officer class so that
