4/8/08 Class Notes Christendom     -     a Christian land.  500-1300.   o Developments in Christianity:  Origins / Development of Monasticism- began in Egypt in Christianity.  Antony became hermit to devote  self to prayer.  Others joined him, community formed; were Monks.  Spiritual leader=Abbot.  Spread to  Europe. Benedict of Nursia- became abbot of sm. Community at Montecasino. Benedictine Rule-     prayer, were self sufficient.  Became centers for learning and caring for poor. o Common property.  Devoted lives to charity.  Vegetarian diet.  Built plain, simple  churches.  Gained many converts and many gifts. Augustinian Rule     - 12 th  century.  Differed in that sacraments offered to the laity (not priests).    Heresy and control were issues.   Dominicans-
